Rules for Living

Rules for Living

We need to follow God’s handbook for life, the Bible. bible handbook

The Bible is also a handbook for living God’s way. It shows us how to please God, what our priorities should be and how to treat other people. The Ten Commandments are given to us as basic laws to help us conduct our lives in a way that is pleasing to God and to show us how to relate to others in a responsible and loving way. God wants us to enjoy our relationship with Him.

Firstly, we are to worship God, to put Him first in our lives and not to make an idol of anything else. We are to honour God and to respect other people and their property. God wants us to be truthful and faithful. He wants to save us from the dangers of deception and the heartache of broken relationships. God wants us to work, but to set aside one day a week to focus on Him. He wants us to have the right balance between work and rest, ministry to others and looking after ourselves by eating healthily and taking exercise. He wants us to trust him and not worry about tomorrow. He urges us to ‘seek first the kingdom of God’ and promises to feed and clothe us. (Matthew 6:25-34) Our true happiness comes from knowing we are loved by God and accepted into His family, the Church. Our true fulfilment comes out of knowing the call on our lives and from using the gifts God has given us to reach our destiny for His glory, knowing we are ‘storing up treasure in heaven.’ (Matthew 6:20) We are merely travellers through this world, heaven bound.

God calls us to be family and community orientated, not proud, selfish and individualist. He wants us to be cheerful, generous, hospitable and loving. He wants us to be thankful, positive and purposeful, not negative, complaining, lazy or indifferent. He calls us to take responsibility for our own lives and to look after the needy; the widow, orphan and the alien. He wants us to lay aside our prejudices, dependencies and pettiness.

God wants to live in the power of the Holy Spirit; to leave behind our old habits, failures and inadequacies and give us a brand new start. He calls us to a radical new lifestyle! He wants to give us a heart of love, not hate; to forgive those who hurt and misuse us and bless those who curse us. God wants us to WALK IN FAITH and not by sight. (Hebrews 11:1, 6.) He wants to change our wrong attitudes and transform our old ways of thinking by renewing our minds with His word. ‘Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind’. (Romans 12:2a). He wants to change us into His likeness, from glory to glory.

God gives us order and laws to live by for our own good, as a loving father. We are rebellious by nature and ‘like lost sheep have all gone astray’. Just as a father has to discipline his children for their own good, God has to chasten us if we continue to sin or to save us from danger. ‘My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and punishes everyone he accepts as a son.’ (Hebrews 12:5-6).

God has given us the Bible so that we can know the truth, be set free from sin that separates us from God’s love and to enjoy life in all its fullness.
